Akeel, – Macanan, como le llamaban en cocina - me enseñó a desconfiar incluso de mi propia sombra, pero también el valor del respeto hacia los compañeros, el valor de la amistad y la capacidad de reconocer y asumir los errores propios. Akeel, - / Macanan/ - in the way the kitchen mates used to told him -, was the person who taught me how to distrust even from my own shadow, but also the value of the respect to the workmates, the friendship value and the capacity of recognizing and assume one´s mistakes.

Los dos nuevos compañeros parecen muy  listos… - refiriédose a Vilal y Hassan-.  The two new workmates are very smart – told me Akeel referring to Vilal and Hassan -.

La noche que le despidieron para después volver a contratarlo – si es que se puede contratar a alguien sin contrato -, al terminar el trabajo, me pidió que le acompañara a comprar tabaco a la tienda. Dimos algo de rodeo hasta llegar al descampado que limitaba con la carretera que conducía hasta la Afgan grocery donde vendían de todo,  donde uno podía comprar y conseguir prácticamente de todo; también tabaco, por cajetillas o por cigarrillos. The night when the manager cancelled him, he ask for me to go together for buying cigarettes to the shop. We were walking more than I thought till arrive to the piece of ground which was limiting with the road that leaders till the Aphgan grocery where you could buy whatever you need, and even more, get basically all and every single thing could be essential for you that night, even also, snuff, paper and cigarettes, by boxes or by units.

Akeel se sentía desorientado, perdido, fuera de su grupo, rechazado por su propia gente. In some way, Akeel started to feel confused, lost, repulsed by its own community, by its own cast.

En el barrio, todo el mundo se conocía. El respeto era algo que había que ganarse y formar parte de la plantilla del restaurante, te hacía sentir más  integrado en la comunidad. Él lo sabía, yo lo sabía; ambos lo sabíamos. In the neighborhood, everybody used to meet each other. The respect was something that you had to wing in order to become part of the restaurant staff, this was making you feeling more engaged with people. He was strongly concerned about it; we both kwew it.

Muchos; algunos desconocidos para mí, me conocían como the spanish man, - el español -. A good number of neighbors, some of them unknown for me, used to call me the Spanish man…

Esa misma noche, de vuelta a casa, un anciano me abordó y me contó una historia de una España lejana, desconocida en parte para mí, historias de aquella España de mis abuelos… That exactly night, when I was going back home after working, an old man came suddenly to me and started to tell a story about a remote Spain, distant to me, stories about my grandfathers Spain…

Lo cierto es que, en aquel instante pensé que aquel iba a ser el punto y final de mi vida; pero no fue así, nunca fue así, aunque por un momento, temeroso de lo desconocido, de aquel desconocido, yo lo dudara. To be honest, at that moment, I thought my life-time was nearly to finish, to expire, but it was not like that, never it was like that; even though, for a while, I was scared, I felt fear from that old man, whose intention was only trying to be polite and kind with me, sharing his own life experience.
