Omar
trabajaba en el restaurante sólo cuando había más carga de trabajo; fines de
semana y festivos. Omar was working at the restaurant only the very busy
days, weekends and holidays.
Recuerdo que se tomaba las
cosas con calma, incluso en los momentos de mayor actividad en la sala; algo
que hacía exasperar a buena parte del resto de la plantilla. I
remember he always used to take things quietly, even when the restaurant was
crowded and there was more charge of work, something what used to exasperate to
the rest of the crew.
Un guiño le bastaba para
entenderse con los compañeros. El inglés es sólo uno de los idiomas que se hablan en UK.
A simple blink was enough for him to talk with workmates. The English it
is only one of the languages you can speak in the UK.
Yo agradecía mucho su
compañía; entre otras cosas, porque trabajando juntos, cada uno a su ritmo,
solíamos terminar a tiempo, lo justo como para poder echar una mano a los demás
con la limpieza del piso. I enjoyed working with him, mainly,
because playing together, we used to finish on time, justo on time to
collaborate giving a hand to the others cleaning the floor.
Omar y yo llegamos a ser
buenos amigos. Incluso quedamos un par de tardes en el city-centre después del trabajo. Omar and me
become good friends. We meet up a couple of evenings in the city-centre after
work.
Una de ellas se acercó a
buscarme a la biblioteca donde pasaba la tarde libre, leyendo e intentando mejorar my broken English. One
time, he came to look for me to the library where I used to spend my day off,
reading and trying to improve my broken English.
El frío era muy intenso. Omar
iba muy bien vestido, aunque tan sólo llevaba un polo en la parte de arriba.
Como decía, el frío era frío – también en la Central Library - y él parecía querer ignorarlo. It was
such a very cold day… Omar was very well dressed, but he was wearing only a
t-shirt on the top. As I had said, the cold was cold – also inside the Central
Library-, and he seemed to me he wanted to ignore it.
Yo tenía dos abrigos. El uno;
el que llevaba puesto, que no abrigaba nada,
lo compré en una tienda de diseño japonés a dos manzanas de la estación
de tren, el día que recibí mi primera
paga. I had two coats. One of them, the which one I was wearing, was a pity,
not really useful, I had bought it in a Japanese fashion shop two blocks far
from the trains station, the day when I get my first wage.
El otro, un abrigo más fino;
abotonado, una trenca de vestir, lo
había traído conmigo desde España. A Omar le gustaba bromear diciéndome que
algún día yo se lo regalaría. The other one, more light, full of
studs, a nice article of clothing, was the which one I had taken with me from
Spain, into my wallet. Omar used to make jokes about it, asking me if I was
willing to give it to him, like a present for our friendship relation.
No tuve oportunidad de
hacerlo; pero lo cierto es que lo hubiera hecho con gusto, de no ser porque
trabajando como trabajaba y ganando lo que ganaba no podía permitírmelo. I had
no the chance for doing it, but to be honest, I would not mind having had it,
but I could not do it just because it was not affordable to me at that moment, just
because I was earning a pin money.
Le habían despedido y estaba
buscando otro trabajo. En la Biblioteca; por unos céntimos, uno podía imprimir
documentos desde el ordenador. Sacó varias copias de su CV. Había trabajado en infinidad de puestos, muy diferentes entre
sí, aunque aquello no pareció impresionar demasiado a las gentes que luego lo
recibieron. The manager had cancelled him and he was seeking for
another job. In the library, for 10 p, you could print documents from the
computer. He printed several CV copies. He had been working in a great number
of jobs, very different one from another, but that worked background seemed no
to cause any impression on the face of those who received it.
Su currículum fue a parar a
una pila de papel, - de otros currículum supongo -, junto a la plancha
grasienta y humeante de aquel home-made
food. His CV finished on the top of a pile of paper, - made
of another CV, I can guess -, besides the greasy fuming stove of that home-made
food.
Omar era astuto como pocos, pero
hacerse valer en aquel lugar, encontrar un hueco en la cara A de la ciudad, a pesar de haber nacido allí, eso sí; en un
barrio de la cara B, - la que no
acostumbra a salir en los panfletos de turismo -, le llevaría más tiempo, quién
sabe, quizás toda una vida. Omar was sharp as clever as no one, but
at that place, one only could help oneself, find a place into the A side of the
city, even though he had been born there, in a poor humble quarter of the B
side of the City, - the which one that did not use to appear on the city
tourism leaflets-, would take him longer, who knows, it might be a whole
life-time.
