Ibrahim

Ibrahim era el propietario del restaurante. Se dejaba caer por allí en contadas ocasiones. Confiaba en Abraham y había delegado –acertadamente; a mi juicio -, toda su responsabilidad en él. Ibrahim was the restaurant owner, the gafa. He used to visit the restaurant only occasionally, one a week more or less. He trusted in Abraham to manage his business – with a good criteria -, delegating all the responsibility on him.

Recuerdo perfectamente el día que nos presentó. I still can remember perfectly the day when Abraham introduced me to him.

Era una persona un tanto autoritaria, algo distante aunque educada y atenta conmigo; cuando le saludaba siempre me respondía con un leve gesto de cabeza. He was somebody rather authoritarian, who used to take distance with the staff, but also, - I must say it -, polite and attentive to me. Whenever we saw I always did great him with a light head gesture (movement) from which he used answered by the same way.

Desde el primer momento Jassy siempre estuvo cerca de mí, preocupándose de que nunca me faltara nada. From the first moment Jassy was always close to me, taking care of me, attending my worries and inquirements.

Jassy preparaba el mejor mango-lazzy juice del mundo, o al menos de aquella parte del mundo. Jassy was the best mango-lazzy juice maker of the world; or at least, I must say, from that part of the world.

Fue él quien me enseñó todo lo relativo al trabajo de los camareros en la sala, entre otras cosas, a limpiar las sillas y las mesas, o como él decía: He was who taught me all about the waiter´s job, for instance, how to clean the chairs and the tables, or as he used to say:

También fue él la persona encargada de mostrarme cómo realizar las rotaciones de salsas en la cámara frigorífica. A la izquierda, más a desmano, se dejaban las tablas nuevas que acabábamos de preparar; a la derecha se dejaban las del día anterior, listas para consumir; más a mano. Subía y bajaba por las escaleras con cuatro de ellas cada vez. No serían una ni dos veces las ocasiones en que acabarían por el suelo… He also was the person liable for showing me how to organize the sauces rotations into the fridge. On the left side, moved away from the door, we used to leave the new ones and on the right hand we used to leave those which we had been making the previous day, ready to eat, at hand. I went up and went down the stairs with four of it each time. Sometimes the trays did not complete the trip…

Dependiendo del día de la semana y de la afluencia de público prevista habíamos de dejar preparadas más o menos cantidades. Depending on the day of the week and the number of clients expected we used to leave more or less ready trays.

Segundo: comprobar que había cucharas suficientes tanto para el comedor, como para la barra del bar-cafetería Second: checking that there were spoons enough for the floor and for the cafetería-bar.

Tercero: puesta a punto de las tablas de salsa. Third: making up the sauces trays.

Jassy era hindú, pero sobre todo alguien que profesaba la religión de la paciencia, el dogma de la quietud, alguien capaz de pensar antes de hacer o decir las cosas, algo reservado a muy pocos humanos. Era, ante todo, un ser extraordinario; como el mismo decía de mí; un buen hombre, a good man. Jassy was hindu, but overall somebody who used to practice the religion of pacience, the dogma and quietness, somebody able to think before doing or saying things, a privilege-like reserved for a short amount of human being. He was, mainly, an extraordinary person; as he used to say about me; a good man.

sin presupuesto para TIZ@S NUEVAS

 

La llegada del Plan Bolonia  trajo consigo nuevos aires a la ciudad de Soria; una de las pioneras en acoger el programa europeo que persigue la mejora en la calidad de la Enseñanza en todos sus ámbitos y facilitar el intercambio de experiencias y la movilidad de los estudiantes en el ámbito de los diferentes países que integran la actual Unión Europea, para fomentar los lazos entre los diferentes pueblos de la Comunidad.

   Ayer en la noche, los alumnos de Magisterio de la Escuela de Soria pertenecientes a la UVA (Universidad de Valladolid), protagonizaron un encierro pacífico para reivindicar que tanto la Universidad como la Junta cumplan con el compromiso adquirido desde principio de curso, ese tan aparente lejano septiembre, cuando formalizaron su matrícula y pagaron las correspondientes cuotas para poder acceder a las clases como lo que son; alumn@s en prácticas.

   Las prácticas de curso constituyen para la mayoría de estos alumn@s una primera toma de contacto con las aulas, un acercamiento a la realidad social, económica y cultural de las mismas.

   Las nuevas tiz@s, o dicho de otro modo, las manos que las han de asir, las de aquéll@s jóvenes que aspiran con su trabajo, dedicación, esfuerzo, ilusión y compromiso, a convertirse en los profesores del mañana, a punto estuvieron de quedarse sin pizarra donde poder empezar a escribir su sueño.

   La protesta tenía; o mejor dicho, tiene; - porque todavía sigue vigente -, un marcado tinte solidario, ya que buena parte del alumnado, tras habérseles asignado las prácticas en centros ubicados en zonas del ámbito rural (mediante sorteo, sin atender a criterios de proximidad, cercanía u otros más racionales)  , se enfrenta ahora a la imposibilidad de cubrir los gastos derivados de ello, teniendo que asumir individualmente, -además-  los ya comprometidos en la capital; esto es; el alquiler del piso, gastos corrientes, etc…

No se trata de un acto de rebeldía gratuito, se trata de garantizar la educación de nuestros futuros profesores, profesores que educaran también mañana a otros más futuros profesores. Desde la distancia y perspectiva con que leo la noticia en http://www.diariodesoria.es/rebelion-en-magisterio-por-las-practicas.html  y que acojo, un tanto perplejo, con toda  la incredulidad, indignación y solidaridad hacia (para con) los alumn@s que merece.

   Desde este espacio, esta plataforma digital, alejados del ruido de los despachos, somos plenamente conscientes de que la tarea de gestionar que atañe a los gestores de lo público, cuando los medios con los que gestionar son escasos merece todo nuestro respeto. No pretende ser ésta una crítica desmesurada, sino más bien, una llamada –invitación- a la reflexión de tod@s los que formamos parte de est@ sociedad, en pos de una enseñanza universal, en pro del derecho a enseñar y aprender, en pro de una educación más educada.

No buscamos responsables jurídicos, sino responsables; personas responsables y comprometidas con su palabra y su trabajo, personas dispuestas a resolver los problemas que el ejercicio del día a día plantea, personas que ejerzan responsablemente su tarea desde la responsabilidad y el respeto que su cargo merece, para consigo mismos y para con la sociedad que les retribuye por ello.

A nuestras Instituciones, por favor, dejen de pasarse la pelota. Trabajen para resolver de forma positiva esta situación.

Una tarde; al final del turno, se acercó a mí y me dijo: One day, at the end of the evening shift, he came to me and confess me:

En alguna ocasión me contó que mis dificultades con el idioma le recordaban a los de su propia esposa. Aprender inglés en el barrio no resultaba una necesidad, porque la mayoría de los vecinos eran asiáticos; pakistaníes, afganos, indios… Con toda seguridad, podríamos decir que el inglés en aquella parte de Inglaterra no era el idioma predominante. Once he told me that my language difficulties reminded him her wife´s ones. It was a fact that being confident with the English language in our quarter was not a vital necessity, because the neighbors, were from Asia in the main; from Pakistan, Indian… For sure, we can assert that the English in that part of  the UK was not the prevailing language.

Un día, durante la comida, me acercó una bandeja con snacks. Aquello, que en nuestro menú figuraba como appetisers, era el plato principal de muchas familias de su país, lo único que en épocas de carestía, tenían para llevarse a la boca. Fue toda una lección para mí. One day, after lunch, he came to me taking a tray with some snacks on it. That meal, what was figuring on the restaurant menu as appetizers, were the main course of many families of his country, the only thing to eat during famine times, the only food for taking to their mouth. It was a lesson to me.

Signa era algo despistado. A veces olvidaba su bolígrafo y yo le dejaba prestado el mío. Signa was a little bit absent minded. Quite often he used to forget his pen and I borrowed him mine.

Acostumbraba a llevarlo a la vista, asomando tímidamente la cabeza por el bolsillo de la camisa.   El broche era de acero inoxidable, muy brillante; lo que lo hacía resaltar todavía más sobre el negro mate del hilo con el que estaba bordado. Era uno de esos made in Germany, de tinta negra y la punta redonda; uno de esos que hacen fácil la escritura. He used to take it in a visible part, leaning out its head timidly over the shirt-pocket neck. The clip (clasp) was made of stainless steel, very bright, what made it to stand out more onto the matt black of the thread with which it had been sewed. It was one of those made in Germany; black ink and rounded tip, one of those which makes easier the writing.

Fue un flechazo a primera vista. Yo lo sabía, por eso, cuando me marché, lo dejé junto a la percha donde colgaba su chaqueta; hacía tiempo que había dejado de pertenecerme. He felt in love with it from the very first sight. I knew it, from the beginning, so for this reason, when I was leaving, I “forgot” it besides the coat-hanger where he used to leave his jacket, because I understood that the pen was not belong to me for any more.

Durante aquel viaje aprendí a observar lo inevidente, esa parte menos visible de lo evidente; aprendí a leer entre líneas, aprendí que no siempre llueve a gusto de tod@s. By the time I was there I had the chance to learn how to observe the inevidence, that part less visible from the evidence; I could learn to read what really matters from each situation, I learned that not always the rain it is a welcoming guest.

Mentiría si digo que despedirme de él fue cosa fácil. I would be telling you a lie if I would say that say good-bye to all this background taking from my mates was easy to me.

   Irfhan y Charlie / Irfhan and Charlie            

De Irfán sólo se me ocurre decir que fue un buen compañero, cordial y respetuoso, no entiendo muy bien por qué pero me tenía aprecio. On Irfhan I only can say that he was a very good mate, kind and respectful. I don´t understand really well why but in some way he did appreciate me.

A veces,  excepcionalmente, me ayudaba con el trabajo secando varias pilas de platos. Era muy exigente, para consigo mismo y para con los demás, incluido el que escribe. Sometimes, rarely, he gave me a hand with the cutlery and the piles of plaits waiting for being replaced into its place. He was very exigent, to himself and also with the others, even me, who is writing this lines.

Charlie era más risueño y algo más resuelto a la hora de hacer las cosas, - al menos en mi opinión-. Charlie was more cheerful and more determined to make things; - at least in my view -…

Le gustaba fumar y de vez en cuando salía fuera y se encendía un pitillo para fumárselo a medias con algún otro compañero. He used to smoke and sometimes; quite often, he went out of the restaurant, to the backyard, striking one cigarette to share fifty-fifty with somebody else, with another workmate, anyone willing to share the break with him.

Compaginaba el trabajo con la asistencia a las clases de un curso para llegar a ser electricista profesional. He was doing several things at the same time, besides being working there, he was attending to a course for learning the electrician professional job.

De Charlie guardaré siempre la imagen de aquel día de fiesta, en que llegó vestido con un traje tradicional Indio,  calzando babuchas, como si de Simbad el marino se tratase. I will keep always on my mind that picture, that celebration when he arrived dressed in the traditional Indian way, wearing slippers, as if he were Simbad the Sailor…

Ellos, como responsables de la sala, llevaban la batuta del tempo. Both they were responsible of the main floor, so they had the task of taking the “tempo” of things.

Romo,… cómo va la cosa hoy? ¿Mucho trabajo? Romo… are you busy today? Very busy?

Hora de cenar – solían recordarme amablemente -. Go for dinner¡- they used to say kindly

Ya os he comentado algo sobre Abraham, Thomas, the boss, pero ahora os lo voy a presentar. Abraham fue la primera persona de aquel país en darme una oportunidad de trabajo. Llevaba 3 semanas de búsqueda incesante sin haber encontrado nada. Mi cuenta de banco había empezado con su particular cuenta atrás… I have already told you something about Abraham, Thomas; the boss, the main manager, but now I am going to introduce him to you. Abraham was the first person who gave me a job opportunity in that country. I had been looking for job intensively for three weeks and I had not been able to find anything interesting. My bank account had started its countdown...

¿Cómo estás? How are you?

¿Todo bien? Is everything fine?

¿Cómo van las cosas? Cuídate. S ab xeriyat he? T^h  ik he. Everything is fine?

Mañana hablamos y te digo algo. Tomorrow I ´ ll talk to you…

Desde el primer momento, la necesidad de ganarme la vida me llevó a querer aprender todo lo posible sobre el negocio, fue un tiempo, que ante todo, dediqué a escuchar a los demás; a todos y cada uno de mis compañeros. From the very first day I wanted to earn my own bread, so for this reason I was learning everything on the trade, the work, the tricks and the secrets. It was a time, which I spent, over all, dedicated to listen to my mates, all and each one of them. It was such as an apprenticeship.

Con toda seguridad, el hecho de ser de fuera y mi falta de fluidez con el idioma contribuyeron a que me convirtiera – de algún modo – en el cómplice de los secretos de muchos de ellos. The fact of coming from abroad, to be the only “foreigner” there, and my lack of fluidity with English helped me to become, - in some way -,  the confidant of many of their secrets.

Me tomé el tiempo necesario (margen) para hablar con ellos sobre diferentes aspectos de su vida personal. I allowed myself time to talk with them about their own single personal lives.

Abraham trabajaba seis días a la semana, unas 75 horas de media.  Ésa había sido su rutina durante los dos años y medio que llevaba viviendo allí. Disfrutaba de un día libre de ciento al viento. Abraham used to work six days on a week, around 75 hours of average. That had became his routine for the last two years which he had been living there. He enjoyed one day off some special occasions.

Antes de eso, había recorrido medio mundo. Incluso había llegado a dirigir todo un hotel-rascacielos de Dubai…  Before this platform, he had been living and working worldwide. He even was managing (as a director) a whole skyscraper-hotel in Dubai…

Dominaba varios idiomas, entre ellos el árabe, el urdú y el inglés. Se interesaba por todo. Era curioso por naturaleza. También quiso aprender algunas palabras en español. Compartir mesa con él en los descansos era apasionante. He could speak perfectly several languages, also Arabic, Urdu and English. He was very curios of everything and also wanted to learn some words in Spanish, just to be polite with clients from our country. Sharing table with him during the breaks was something amazing, we had good times.

Era ya tarde, casi la hora de cerrar. Como de costumbre, antes de apagar las luces, subí a limpiar el staff-room, siguiendo las instrucciones de Osman, otro compañero. Llamé a la puerta. La golpee un par de veces con los nudillos. La abrí. Abraham estaba cenando solo (siempre era el último en hacerlo, por ser la persona con mayor responsabilidad y el encargado de atender las necesidades de los clientes en todo momento; el último en abandonar el barco). It was late, we were just on closing time. As usually, before turning off the lights, I went upstairs in order to clean the staff-room, following the orders (instructions) of Osman, another workmate. I knocked the door. I did it softly twice with my knuckles. I opened it. Abraham was having dinner alone. (He always was the last one on doing it, just because being the person who had more responsibility and who had to care the clients in every single moment; he was the last one in leaving (abandoning) the boat).

Gentilmente, me invitó a sentarme y compartir mesa con él. Gently, as always, he invited me to take a seat and spend some time talking together.

¿Cómo estuvo la cena? Have you enjoyed your meal?

Las lecciones de todo tipo se sucedían en su compañía; también las económicas. He taught me every short of lessons, also the economicals.

¿A cuánto está el cambio de la rupia hoy? – le pregunté -. What about the rupia change today?- I asked him… -

La India es un país emergente; y eso, saber que algún día las cosas mejorarían,  les hacía sentirse orgullosos de su propia patria, albergando la esperanza de que la prosperidad económica trajera consigo mejoras en la calidad de vida de sus gentes. India is an emergent country; and this fact, knowing that some day in the future thinks could change to better, knowing that things will improve, used to make him to feel proud of his mother country, hoping that economical prosperity would bring a better quality of life for its countrymen.

Su cabeza siempre estaba en aquella lejana India, lejos del ruido del local. Tenía tres pequeños y una mujer a los que no veía desde hacía varios años. Hablaba con ellos a diario, pero aquello se le antojaba insuficiente. His mind was always in that far India, far away from the restaurant noise. He had three kids and a wife whose he had not seen since years. He used to talk with them by the Internet daily, but that was not enough for him.

El vuelo UK-India duraba unas 8 horas, pero de algún modo, no sé cómo,  él conseguía viajar hasta allí en el tiempo que el té de su taza tardaba en enfriarse. Flying from UK to India used to take around 8 hours of flight, but in some way, I don´t know how, he used to travel there by the time that it took his cup of tea to get cold.

 

Deje mi casa porque… I left my home because of…

Trabajaba tanto porque quería compartir con su familia las bondades que un país rico en divisas y recursos como Inglaterra, ofrecía a sus ciudadanos. Una mejor educación, una casa mejor, una  mayor expectativa de vida… en fin, algo diferente. Y lo cierto es que, como él mismo me confesó,  estaba a punto de conseguirlo. He was working so hard because he was willing to share with his family the goodness of a rich country, plenty of resources and foreign exchange, like England, was offering to its citizens. A better education, a better home, a good life expectancy… I mean, something different from what he had lived. And the fact is that, as he told me, he was nearly to get it.

De Abraham  me quedo con la frase que le soltó a otro compañero: I always will keep in mind the sentence that he said to another workmate:

Respeto: lo das, lo recibes. Respect: give it, get it

Me impresionó tanto, que al llegar a casa, alrededor de la una y media de la madrugada, me tomé el tiempo necesario para apuntarlo sobre una de las hojas del libro de Hassan Fathy que estaba leyendo. It caused me a great impression, till the point that when I arrived home, around midnight, I took the necessary time for writing down it onto one of the sheets of the Hassan Fathy´s book which I was reading (it was also my pocket scrapbook).

Valoraba el trabajo en equipo tanto como yo, incluso me echaba una mano con los platos, al final de la jornada;  no sé si por terminar antes, o sencillamente por solidaridad, por eso; por echarme una mano. Si algún día terminábamos antes, Abraham aprovechaba para reunirnos a todos y contrastar opiniones en torno a la dinámica del grupo y los puntos a mejorar. Su éxito residía precisamente en eso, en su empatía, en ser capaz de escuchar a los otros, en hacer equipo, no solo en los buenos números. He strongly appreciated the teamwork, in the way I did it, and even he used to give me a hand with the set of dishes, at the end of the shift, I don´t know if he used to do it just for finishing earlier or easily to help me, because of solidarity, giving me a hand. If for any reason we finished earlier, Abraham used to take advantage of this for organizing a brainstorm-like to talk about the group dynamic and how to improve some points of the life together. His success was based on its empathy, on being able to listen to the other, on making team from the respect, not just in good numbers.

Como en el bar no se vendían bebidas alcohólicas, los clientes se traían su propio vino – algo que sí estaba permitido -.  Mis compañeros sabían que coleccionaba corchos para después hacer cuadros con ellos. Por eso, siempre que descorchaban una botella lo guardaban para mí. Gracias a eso cuento con corchos procedentes de casi todo el mundo conocido, incluso de cepas de países tan remotos que ni siquiera figuran en los atlas de geografía. Because we did not sell alcoholic drinks, some regulars used to bring their own wine,  - something what was allowed -. My workmates knew that I was a cork collector, because I had learnt to make a short of pictures by using them, I am just an artist. So whenever they uncorked a bottle they kept in into his pocket to me. Thanks of this I have got corks originals from the whole known world, and even from vines natural from countries so remotes that they are not registered on the Geography charts.

Otro de los camareros del restaurante, me propuso contraer matrimonio con una joven India, única y exclusivamente para conseguir los derechos de residente; única y exclusivamente para sacarle dinero. Another of the restaurant waiters, proposed me to get married with a young Indian girl, only and exclusively in order to she could get the European resident rights, only and exclusively to make money from the situation. 

Tengo algunos contactos… un buen negocio, – me dijo-.

Aunque llegué a preguntarle por los motivos que aquella chica tenía para venir a Europa, lo cierto es que finalmente me negué a ello, lo que terminó por distanciarnos y complicar nuestra relación. Although I even asked for him the reasons why she wanted to come to Europe, the only true is that finally I did not accept it and our friendship relation turned into worst and we both took distance one from each other.

Al margen de este episodio, he de decir que fue un buen compañero dentro y fuera del trabajo. Le costó un tiempo encajar mi decisión pero finalmente lo hizo, respetando mi postura; en buena parte, porque de no ser porque realmente necesitaba ese dinero; también él hubiera estado totalmente de acuerdo conmigo. Apart from this episode, I must tell you that he was a good mate in and out of the restaurant work. He took time to accept my decision but finally he did it, respecting my choice, mainly, because I personally think that if he really had had the vital necessity to make that money, he would have strongly agree with me, I know he was doing something against his own principles.

El dinero fácil no es nada bueno, – le contesté -.

No obstante, su destino estaba lejos de aquel restaurante… Nevertheless, his destiny was far away from that restaurant…

El trabajo duro que curte las manos y las miradas de los recién llegados; se premia y valora con respeto, en la misma medida que se desprecia la falta de escrúpulos de quienes buscan hacer negocio a costa de sus propios compatriotas. The hard work tends to harden the hands and the looks of any newcomer, it is rewarded and well valued with respect, - you give it; you get it-,  in the same measure (proportion) than it is repulsed the lack of sensitivity and scrupulousness of all those who are looking for making business thanks to their own compatriot´s life and helplessness.

Días después de haber abandonado el trabajo me encontré con Amen en la calle, en Stratford Road,-  la que conducía a la ciudad de un tal Shakespeare, aquel inglés que un día escribiera aquello de city is people; la ciudad es la gente -, caminando por la acera nevada, justo en frente de una de las pastelerías del barrio, la  sweeterie, junto al semáforo de la esquina, mientras esperaba al otro lado para cruzar. After several days having left the work I met with Amen on the street, in Stratford Road, - the road which drives to the Shakespeare ´s city, that famous English who once wrote that of “city is people”, the city is made up by people -, walking on the snowed pavement, just in front of one the neighborhood sweeteries, besides the traffic lights on the corner while he was waiting on the other side to cross over.

No iba solo, empujaba un carrito de bebé y dentro de él, bajo su paraguas, descubrí una pequeña de preciosos ojos esmeralda. He was not alone, he was pushing a pushchair and inside it, under its umbrella, I discovered a little babygirl with amazing precious emerald eyes.

Las manos de Amen ya no le pertenecían. La pequeña era su vida, todo lo demás había pasado a ocupar un segundo plano, incluido su propia tiempo. (Supongo que estar al cuidado de otro ser humano nos exige renunciar a una parte de nosotros mismos en beneficio de ese pequeño otro, quizás porque verse reflejado en su mirada lechosa recompense) Amen´s hands would not belong yet to him. The little baby was the true meaning of his life, everything else was not important, even his own life-time and health; he had focused all his effort and attention on her, leaving everything else in second place (I suppose that taking care of another human being requires us to renounce to a good part of ourselves to benefit those small others, perhaps because the result is very well rewarded when  you are able to see yourself onto his milky crystalline).

Desde entonces comencé a ver a Amen de otro modo, con otros ojos, comprendí por qué día tras día intentaba completar su trabajo a tiempo; porque realmente tenía una buena razón para llegar pronto a casa. Entendía su pequeña lucha diaria, era capaz de acercarme mejor a su forma de hacer. Since then, I started to see Amen in a different light; with another view, in a different way. I understood why he, day after day, used to try finish his job on time; because he had a good (the best) reason to arrive home early. Anyway, I could understand his particular daily fight, I started to fell more close to him.

No me importa admitirlo. Sí; siempre confíe en él. Me gustaba pensar que estaba sentando un buen ejemplo no sólo para su pequeña; sino también para todos nosotros,  el resto de sus compañeros. I don´t mind to be honest. Yes, from the very beginning, I always trusted him. I liked to think that he was setting a good life-example not only just for his little, but also for all of us, the rest of the staff, his workmates.

Estoy convencido sobre esto: esa niña hablará inglés y tendrá las manos más bonitas del mundo, porque su umbrella siempre estará ahí, protegiéndola los días de lluvia. I am sure about this (I strongly believe it): that little baby will speak English fluently and she will have the most beautiful hands in the world, because her “umbrella” always will be there, protecting her from the rain.
